We seek to mentor urban peoples by providing: Summer day camps, training and mentoring camp counselors, organizing and coaching basketball teams for the youth of Walltown, mentoring/discipling several youth in the neighborhood, identifying and training indigenous leaders for future ministry, fundraising for Urban Hope Summer Camp, and networking resources and recruiting volunteers from Duke University to help with different needs in the community (After School Program tutors, Big Brother/Big Sister mentors, athletic coaches, Bible study leaders).

Significant events during the school year:

During a 3-month period, Ed led our team in an exercise called “Developing a High Trust Culture”—a process designed to identify and affirm our strengths and contributions to the team. This process concluded with the team creating a new mission statement for our ministry in Walltown:

Urban Hope is raising up generations of young heroes—who are beating the odds by the grace of God—through creating safe places in our neighborhood so that we can grow together into wholeness in Christ. (II Corinthians 5:17; Colossians 1: 28-29; II Timothy 2:2; Galatians 2:20)

    • Page conducted a workshop for volunteer tutors and helped organize a tutoring program at our church in the neighborhood. Ed & Page are both tutors in this program.
    • Ed mentored two 5th grade boys & worked through the Child Evangelism Fellowship material with them
    • Ed & Page raised $30,000 to help fund the Urban Hope ’09 summer camp.
    • The Urban Hope team conducted a bi-weekly Bible study for the teens in the neighborhood. An average of 22 teens attended “Bible Jump Off”.
    • Urban Hope Summer Camp ’09 (June 3 – August 5) :a 7-week summer camp for approximately 35 youth in our neighborhood. We help recruit, train, and shepherd the counselors throughout the summer.
    • Ed also works approximately 20% of his time with the People Resources Team of The Navigators.
